Representatives from the Church of Scientology in Bournemouth and Poole are coming to give a talk on their side of the popular story. The talk will be about the lives of the ‘everyday’ people in the church and how it affects them and will hopefully address many of the questions we have about the church and its place in society.
There will be a question and answer session at the end where the representatives will be happy to answer any questions you may have, don’t be afraid of asking! We will also hopefully be getting a demo of an E-Meter.
We would really like a broad range of views represented in the audience to generate some interesting discussion and comparisons and therefore we encourage members of any of the religious societies or unions in the university to come along.
As always, after the meeting, we will relocate to the Stag’s Head where I am sure discussions will continue. We always enjoy the informal discussions that happen afterwards in the Stag’s so if you haven’t joined us there before, we would encourage you to do so, it’s always great fun.
We have noticed some interest in this event from Anonymous. They have been famous in the past for amassing large groups to protest various things the Church of Scientology have done. Our events are open to the public so if members of Anonymous turn up as just normal people, they will be able to attend the talk and ask questions. However, if a group of people in Guy Fawkes masks turn up with placards condemning Scientology, we will not be able to admit them for security reasons. Whilst they would almost certainly protest peacefully, the society, and ultimately myself, are responsible for the actions of the public at events we host, and any damage that is done to university property. We will notify the university security team about the event.
This is not intended to imply that Anonymous are a security risk, but merely that any protest is potentially a security risk and therefore, so that in the unlikely event that something bad should occur, we can show that we did everything in our power to prevent it.
Regarding the Q&A session:
We have come to the conclusion that the best way to handle questions is for them to be pre-submitted and asked by a member of the committee. Questions may be submitted in advance below and there will also be a way to submit questions on paper during the talk itself. Discussion with the audience will very much be promoted but initial questions will only come through us.
Please only use this contact form for questions you would like asked to the Scientologists. If your question is asked, we will attempt to reply to you with the answer given, but that may not be possible. We will also try to get a summary of answers on a blog post. Please word the questions precisely, they will be read out word-for-word.
(The contact form has been removed because the talk is over. Thank you for all your questions)
